Summer vs Winter Koi Feeding
Koi are cold blooded, meaning that their metabolism changes based on the temperature of their pond. Experienced koi owners make a few adjustments to their fish’s feeding plans as the water temperature changes with the seasons. Keep in mind that there’s no such thing as one-size-fits-all feeding plan. Water temperatures, water quality, dissolved oxygen levels, and stocking densities should be considered prior to feeding.
Feeding Koi in Hot Weather
In hot weather, koi fish have faster metabolisms and require more frequent feeding with a high-protein diet to support their increased activity. It’s best to feed them smaller amounts multiple times a day, making sure they eat everything within a few minutes to avoid water quality issues. Always feed during cooler parts of the day, early morning or evening, to prevent stress and digestion problems.
- For water temperatures 64°F and above, feed an amount fish will readily consume in 5 minutes
- We recommend feeding 2 to 4 times per day with Ultra Balance Premium Maintenance formula or feeding 3 to 5 times per day with Ultra Balance Premium Growth formula for optimum growth of young fish
- Reduce feeding if water temperature exceeds 88°F and watch closely for signs of stress
Feeding Koi in Cold Weather
When the weather is colder, koi fish become less active and their metabolism slows down, therefor they require less food and lower-protein diets. Switch to a wheat germ-based food and feed sparingly, only when water temperatures are consistently above 50°F. Avoid feeding altogether if the water drops below 50°F, as koi cannot properly digest food in low temperatures.
- For water temperatures below 64°F, feed an amount fish will readily consume in 5 minutes
- Feeding a highly digestible wheat germ diet such as Ultra Balance Premium Maintenance formula 1 to 2 times per day
- If the water temperature drops below 50°F, stop feeding your koi (fasting them) since their metabolism slows down and they only eat what their body requires by grazing on algae
- Introduce food again once the water temperature rises consistently above 50°F
Seasonal Feeding Makes a Lasting Difference
Feeding your koi correctly throughout the year is essential for their health, growth, and longevity. By adjusting their diet to match the seasonal changes in water temperature and their metabolic needs, you’ll help them thrive in every season. Whether it’s high-protein food in the summer or wheat germ-based formulas in cooler months, choosing the right nutrition at the right time ensures vibrant, active koi and a balanced pond environment.
